This week in our "Women in the Driver's Seat" series, we're thrilled to feature Melissa Kulp, Accounting Manager, Carshop.
How long have you been in the automotive industry?
I have worked in the automotive industry for 23 years.
Can you share a few sentences about your career journey in the automotive industry?
CarSense (now CarShop) was hiring for a receptionist, and it was close to home. I didn’t know anything about cars but needed a job, so I applied. I quickly grew to love the role! A few years in, I was promoted and spent 12 years as a service advisor. That’s when I really grew and learned so much about cars and the automotive industry. I was promoted again to the accounting department, and a few years later—here I am as the Accounting Manager, and I couldn’t be happier. My career has truly begun!
What do you enjoy most about working in the automotive industry?
I enjoy the people I work with, and I love that this industry is so large and constantly evolving—there’s always something new to learn and room to grow. I’m grateful to be part of it.
Can you describe a key initiative or project you’ve led or contributed to that made a meaningful impact on the business?
While I may not have led a specific initiative or project, my biggest achievement is becoming the Accounting Manager. After 23 years with the company and learning so much, I feel like I’m right where I’m supposed to be.
What are your standout strengths?
I’m friendly, kind, and always willing to help however I can. I’d like to think of myself as a team player—it makes my heart happy to support others.
What are your favorite hobbies or interests?
I love being outdoors, watching the Phillies play, riding motorcycles (as a passenger), going to the beach, and spending time with friends and my kids.
What’s your go-to book, podcast, TV show, or movie?
Romance or comedy movies are my go-to!
What motivates you each day?
God and my kids! Every day is a blessing and an opportunity—a chance to help someone else through their day, and a chance to be grateful. My goal is to stay positive and try to make every day a great one!
What advice would you give to other women considering a career in the automotive industry?
Go for it! I was nervous at first because I was one of only six women in the company—but that’s changing every day. There are more of us now, and it’s a fun, fast-paced, and growing environment to be a part of.
